Jamie Watson

Pro soccer player Jamie Watson (pictured above), formerly of our beloved Orlando City Lions, has played for a variety of pro teams in his long career.

Watson – who has been a pro since 2004 – spent time in Major League Soccer before he became a member of the Lions and is currently on the roster for NASL team Minnesota United FC.

Jamie will be talking about the ongoing World Cup, the Lions landing Kaka, and what the future holds for soccer in Orlando.

“Gnarly Charlie” Hajek

New Smyrna Beach legend “Gnarly Charley” Hajek runs the “Gnarly Charley’s Surf Series,” which is a surf competition for kids (or “Groms”). Gnarly Charley is a seven-time East Coast Surfing Champion and his motto is, “If you love your job, you never work a day in your life.”

Being around Hajek is like experiencing Jeff Spicoli – the loveable stoner surfer character from the iconic ’80s film Fast Times at Ridgemont High” – on ten cups of coffee.

But Charley is not hyped on caffeine, he’s stoked on teaching the groms to shred the ocean! His Southeastern surf series has grown extremely over the years in sponsors and competitors, from local talent, to surfers coming from throughout the state and around the nation.

His series teaches kids how fun surfing can be and how to work together as a team, through contests, over night camps and one-on-one coaching.

Some of his current and former competitors include:

  • Lea Talyor (skater Adam Taylor‘s sister), who rides for the Huntington Beach High School Surf Team
  • Noah Dovin, who travels the World and recently won the 2013 “Surf and Turf” series in Cocoa Beach
  • Up and coming female grom surfer Rachel Presti, who’s been collecting so many trophies that her mom is thinking about buying a bigger trophy case, as it’s on the verge of collapsing from the weight of her winnings

Gnarly Charley’s next contest is being held July 12th at Holland Park in Melbourne Beach. Sign up starts at 8 a.m., the contest starts at 9 p.m. For more info on the surf series, visit the GnarlyCharleySurfSeries.com website.
